REMEMBERING AFENI SHAKUR: TUPAC'S MUM DIES AT 69.

Tributes are flooding in for political activist Afeni Shakur Davis following her death aged 69. The mother of rap Legend, Tupac Shakur and former member of the Black Panther died from possible cardiac arrest at her home in California according to reports.

The report said deputies had responded to a report of a possible cardiac arrest at Shakur’s home at 9:34pm on Monday. Efforts to revive her failed and she was pronounced dead about an hour later at the hospital.
Rolling Stone reported that the Marin County Sheriff’s Department confirmed Shakur’s death on Twitter. An investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of her death.

Afeni Shakur was born in 1947 with the birth name Alice Williams. She later became a major member of the Black Panther party and spent time in prison while pregnant with Tupac as a result of her activities as a Panther.
The late rapper’s Grammy nominated song Dear Mama was a tribute to her and the sacrifices she made in raising him.

Following the shooting death of her son, Tupac in 1996, Shakur had taken control of his estate winning legal battles against his record label for ownership of his huge body of unreleased materials.

Afeni, who was also mum to Tupac Shakur, inspired thousands with her work with the Black Panther Party and also by allowing Tupac’s legacy and music to live on after he was killed aged 25 in a drive-by shooting in 1996.

One tribute to her that is particularly poignant following her death is an undated letter from Eminem that surfaced last year after it was shared online. It was confirmed to be the work of Eminem by his label Shady Records.

The tribute, which refers to Afeni as “a true queen”, was originally published in 2008 book Tupac Remembered and went on display at the Tupac Amaru Shakur Centre for the Arts in Georgia, US.
Eminem, aka Marshall Mathers III, first apologised for his “sloppy” drawing, which was enclosed with the letter, as he had no pencils and had to write in pen.
