CAMEROONIAN WHO ATTEMPTED SUICIDE IN LEKKI IS RESCUED BY LASEMA.
A Twitter @kenegbas user sent in photos and videos of a man attempting to commit suicide by in Ikate, Lekki. According to Instablog9ja, his name is Frederick Gino from Cameroon and he has no idea how he came into Nigeria.
Ken Egbas narrated as follows,
I should state here that the electricity pole that the said man climbed is directly in front of my residence. I was present from onset 6:35am or thereabout when this began till 3:15pm when he was brought down by LASEMA. Plus, when I heard the commotion outside & looked and saw my security man involved I went outside called them to inquire what the issue was. I also tried to engage him in a conversation. He was looking gaunt, underfed, distraught, disoriented. Because he was walking around without a shirt & looking dirty, it attracted attention of some four guys on the street who asked who he was. So he reacted badly to being accosted & shoved. At closer looked, I could hazard a guess that he may also had been 'high' on something.
He said " I don suffer for this life. No money..no house...five days I never chop. Everywhere I go them pursue me..."I go Morocco, dem deport me. See my life...I no fit help myself. I no get cloth or place to sleep. E better make I die".
Those were his exact words to me. Then he started running & three guys chased him. He ran into this building & in process of apprehending him a glass window was shattered. Hence the peoplee chasing him who were also overzealous started beating him & calling him a thief. That was the point at which he made for the pole &begun climbing with hands & feet. I was surprised how he did that so fast. After he got up there he was muttering stuff in French, Hausa & pidgin English. At a point I had to call my Beniniose cook to interpret. He said he wanted cigarettes &ogogoro. I asked cook to get them for him & also raised up the sum of 5000 naira & showed him. At a point it seemed he was cooperating. after a while he started speaking gibberish. Say he wanted Nepa to give power so he could die.
Officials from PHCN, Nigerian Police Force and Fire Service later arrived at the scene but they were not “well-equipped” to carry out a rescue operation.
In the end, a neighbor provided an inflatable trampoline in an attempt to persuade the man to come down.
As at the time of this report he is yet to get off the electric pole but thankfully the appropriate authorities are now on ground to help.
He was later brought to the ground safely. This was after he refused all forms of help and even foiled the LASEMA officials attempt to rescue him.
For the rescue operation, two men went up a ladder to rescue him and to do that, they tried to topple him over with sticks. He held fast to the pole before he started using his teeth to tear off the cables. When the pain became unbearable, he jumped off and landed on a low rooftop. Before landing, he cut a corner of the roofing sheet and began using it to slit his throat once he landed. In the end, the men wrestled him down and had him in cuffs hands & feet
Frederick Gino had a deep gash on his throat inflicted by roofing sheet he used to slit throat.
