MEET THE FIRST FEMALE AND FIRST AFRICAN FIFA SECRETARY-GENERAL.

Senegal’s Fatma Samoura has been appointed as FIFA’s Secretary-General, becoming the first female in that post and the first African in such position.

She succeeds former secretary-general Jerome Valcke, who was recently banned from football-related activity for 12 years.

The 54-year-old Samoura spent 21 years working for the United Nations and will assume duties at the world football governing body in June. Samoura’s appointment was announced at FIFA’s congress in Mexico City

Speaking on the appointment FIFA President Gianni Infantino said:

“It is essential that FIFA incorporates fresh perspectives as we continue to restore and rebuild our organisation. She has a proven ability to build and lead teams, and improve the way organisations perform. Importantly for FIFA, she also understands that transparency and accountability are at the heart of any well-run and responsible organisation,”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Blatter, FIFA President since 1998, stood down last year and was later suspended from football for six years for breaching ethics guidelines.

NAN reports that Samoura, who will undergo an eligibility check before her role is ratified, currently works for the UN in Nigeria, and speaks four languages.

She started her UN career as a senior logistics officer with the World Food Programme in Rome in 1995.

Samoura has since served as country representative or director in six African countries, including Nigeria.

“Today is a wonderful day for me, and I am honoured to take on this role. This role is a perfect fit for my skills and experience – strategic, high-impact team building in international settings – which I will use to help grow the game of football all over the world. I also look forward to bringing my experience in governance and compliance to bear on the important reform work that is already underway at FIFA. FIFA is taking a fresh approach to its work – and I am eager to play a role in making that approach as effective and lasting as possible,” she said.

DIVORCE IS AN AMPUTATION, FIX YOUR MARRIAGE-CHIAMAKA MAKAS OKORO ON DIVORCE.

Barr.Chiamaka Makas Okoro shared an insightful thought about divorce on her Facebook page. She advised couples to try and fix their marital problems than rushing to court to end their marriage.

Read her post below.

"I was in court and a couple came for dissolution of their marriage (divorce) and the judge said "from your pleading the only thing I can decipher is ego problem (the couple are professionals and doing very well too) so I must do my best to see that you two reconcile infact the next sitting will be in my chambers then i'll just put on a T-shirt and possibly Jean so we all can talk and have your issue resolved, but after I try and it doesn't work then I may be inc...lined to accede to your petition" I was amazed at the Judge's ruling and determination to have them fix their marriage.

With the trend of divorce now, people think is just easy to rush to court and have your marriage dissolved, no it doesn't work that way. The law is more interested in maintaining the sanctity of marriage and seeks to buttress it's stability than undermining it.

This is why you can't ask for divorce within two years of marriage except in exceptional circumstances and with the leave(permission) of court(which convincing the court is not easy). This is also why the ground for divorce is that marriage has "broken down irretrievably"( the law goes further to buttress this point) that is there's no hope again for that marriage to survive.

We have to be careful with the choices we make in the area of marriage because while there's room for divorce is also not easy gaining same I don't even want to delve into the demerits, I had written a little on it sometime.

Certain marital conflicts can actually be reconciled if the parties involved can come down to have it fixed. Running from our problems doesn't solve it, it will still stare us in the face if not today then another day. Be more concerned with fixing than breaking.

Don't let unnecessary ego and selfish reasons deprive you of your home and your peace or cause your kids to have a broken home.

Divorce is like an amputation, it brings about a permanent disability, do your best to avert and avoid it especially by the choices and the decisions you make.

We totally Agree!

READ GENEVIEVE NNAJI'S NEW INTERVIEW WITH VENTURES AFRICA.

In this amazing feature for Ventures Africa (written by author Uzodinma Iweala), we get a look into Genevieve Nnaji‘s life like never before.
In an interview with Ventures Africa Nollywood superstar Genevieve Nnaji talks about her childhood and how that helped shape the woman she is today. She also talks about her journey in Nollywood in the past almost twenty years and how her new movie ‘Road To Yesterday‘ was her way of re-branding and making a comeback into the industry as an actress, a producer and a media entrepreneur.

Her company, The Entertainment Network (TEN) founded with BFF and business partner Chinny, is her way of giving back to the economy and helping the Nigerian movie industry grow beyond all measures.

See excerpts from the feature below.

On her childhood: I was a tomboy. I had three brothers right behind me. My sisters were too busy with themselves – you know how elder sisters are. I played football on the street. I got into a fight with a neighbor of mine who was a boy and I beat him up… I was six years old. We were mates and he was fat. He definitely asked for it and he got it.

On her dad: My dad was the kind of person you didn’t want to speak to you because you would actually feel the disappointment that you are at that time. In fact he had a way of – its not even pleading to your conscience – I think it’s a silent threat to your conscience.

On how helping her mother sell things shaped her: She traded, she sold stuff, she got her children to sell stuff for her and we had to. We had no choice. We were living in her house. We cried. She did things you needed to do at that time. Your friends are not doing it. Why should you be the one to be doing it? You’re embarrassed about it, but I’m grateful for that because I think if I wasn’t even given that chance to be humble, I probably wouldn’t appreciate what I have today and understand that it doesn’t make me better than the next person. And [I] just know that everyone is equal and everyone is entitled to love and respect.

On always being artistic: I watched a lot of TV as a child, so I think I was pretty much screen trained. Of course there was no Nigerian cinema then, so everything was on TV. As a primary school student she excelled in the arts, painting and even producing a comic book series that became very popular in her school. I would have my classmates bombard me to write the next one while they were reading.

On her first role in ‘Wanted’: My role was to interview Regina Askia, a former beauty queen turned actress who was a goddess at that time. That was major. I had to pull it off as a pro and I did it, and the producers asked me if I had done it before and I said no. They were amazed at my confidence—probably I had some training in church or something— but I remember I enjoyed doing it.

On leaving school to pursue acting: My dad didn’t find it funny. He wasn’t happy about it, but I kind of reassured him that I would go back, that it wasn’t over. He was mostly concerned about the amount of exposure film was going to bring me, coming from a very conservative, almost prudish home of a Catholic Igbo family.

On her first salary: Even the kind of car I drive right now cannot give me that kind of joy that my first ride gave me. I must have a minimum of my first salary in my wallet — two thousand Naira. I can have more, but that’s the minimum. It was my first salary. It’s dear to my heart. That was my welcome fee into the world of entrepreneurship. It’s just there. I love it. I spent more than that to get the two thousand though on transport faire, cause by the time they tell you to go and come back so many times, you’ve spent way more than that, but that was who I was. I worked for it. I have to get paid for it. I’d probably squander every money that is dashed to me, but the one I would sweat for, I don’t play with. I don’t talk money because I want people to focus on work. Money is not good for creative people. I don’t value myself materially. Take everything.

On how the storyline ‘Road to Yesterday’ came to be: I’m someone who’s dark a lot of the time. I just wonder a lot. My mind really travels a lot and I think during one of these mind journeys of mine, I was wondering about the thin line between life and death and I was thinking about something my mom had told me, stories in the family and stories from random people about how their loved ones who have passed, have appeared to them, right before they passed or the time they’re passing.

On deciding to make the movie: I made this film because I realize people grow and move on. Things change in their life, but they don’t expect things to change in yours. People don’t expect that you are human because you are a superstar. In other words, you can’t grow, learn, and make mistakes. They don’t expect those normal things from you. You are expected to know it all because you are famous.

On her celebrity status: I didn’t set out trying to be the next somebody, to be like this person. I just set out to do something that I didn’t understand, but something my heart wanted, something that comes out from within, and I just wanted to be given the chance to let it out and express myself. I am me, but I am also conscious of the fact that am being watched. I have a responsibility not just to myself but to young people.  I didn’t set out to be anybody’s role model but you grow up, you grow into yourself and become aware of how much impact you can have on the lives of other people. I don’t take it for granted and I believe in setting an example. That’s all I’m trying to do. I’m not saying I’m a saint or I’m going to be perfect. But I’ve learned that acknowledging my imperfections and my mistakes has enabled me to become wiser and smarter in the choices I make in my life. For me it’s all about being true to yourself.  When you do that you will never be a ‘wanna be’, you will be who you want to be.

FUEL SUBSIDY REMOVAL:INCREASE MINIMUM WAGE-SEN.BEN MURRAY-BRUCE.

Senator Ben Murray-Bruce Senator representing Bayelsa East, Senatorial district, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to increase minimum wage to cushion the effects of subsidy removal.

Bruce made the call in a series of tweets late Thursday night.

The Silverbird Group Chairman had already pointed out that subsidy removal is a good policy, said that if the previous administration had not been resisted when it came up with the policy in 2012, “Nigeria would have had a better economy today”.
I actually believe Kachikwu took the right decision for our economy. But why did the then opposition frustrate GEJ from doing it in 2012?
THOUGH Kachikwu is right, the least FG could have done was copy GEJ and increase minimum wage before increasing the price of petrol.
Is it fair on the masses to ask them to pay double for fuel when we have not improved the economy or reduced what we in govt consume?” he said.

A WOMAN RESCUED AFTER MORE THAN 12 HOURS IN CRASHED CAR.

According to CNN report, After her car tumbled more than 500 feet down an embankment and rescue didn't come for at least 12 hours. she managed to contact her husband via a voice mail, before she was rescued.

The woman, in her early 40s, was stuck in her vehicle in remote Orange County for about 12 to 14 hours after she disappeared while on her way home Wednesday night, Capt. Larry Kurtz of the Orange County Fire Authority said Thursday.

Her husband became concerned Thursday morning and called police, Kurtz said.

Her husband, who is a deputy in Riverside County, had worked until 2 a.m. When checking his voice mail he listened to a message from his wife, who had called him after the crash. It was hard to hear the message, which went in and out, but the husband heard her say something about Anaheim.

Police found her phone by pinging cell phone towers and California Highway Patrol helicopters found the car around 10:40 a.m. Thursday.

The woman was airlifted as a trauma case, but her injuries didn't appear to be life-threatening.

The Los Angeles Time reported the road "offers a long, scenic drive in an unincorporated section of Orange County but has steep cliffs and, in some areas, no guardrails."

The California woman looks like she will live to talk about her harrowing ordeal.
The cause of the crash is unknown.

SIX HOMOSEXUALS ARRESTED IN EDO.

According to Punch- Six men were arrested by the police for allegedly engaging in acts of homosexuality in the Benin area of Edo State.

The suspects were paraded by the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 5, AIG Musa Daura, on Thursday, said they were arrested on May 9, 2016.

Daura gave the names of the suspects as Festus Osagiede (24), Hyacinth Imahanrebhor (20), Itama Omon (25), Onwukwe Prince (28), Monye Chukwuma (23) and Osadebe Kelvin (26), adding that they had confessed to have been committing the crime since 2006.

He said Osagiede first committed the crime with the third suspect at a night club in Benin in 2006.

“After the third suspect (Itama) got drunk, Osagiede took him to his house and raped him. Since then, they have been committing the crime with others at large until May 2016, when luck ran out on them,” Daura said.

The youngest among the suspects, Hyacinth, said he was forced into the act by Osagiede, who allegedly threatened to kill him if he disclosed it to anyone.

He said, “It happened late last year, when I was returning from a birthday party at night. I was unable to get public transport back home.

“I met Festus (Osagiede) on my way and he asked me why I was roaming about.Later, he offered to let me pass the night at his place.

“That night, he touched me. In the course of shouting at him, he forcefully penetrated me and it got me sick.

“He said if I told anybody, he knew where to find me and my family, and he would kill me.”
However, the AIG described the crime as a disturbing trend, saying many of the perpetrators had formed cliques. He said the suspects would be charged to court on Friday (today).

“You will agree with me that this offence is an offence against humanity and nature, an abominable act that should be condemned by all,” he added.

PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATION WERE PAYING 838 CEMETERY KEEPERS AND THERE IS NO CEMETERY MANAGED BY THE STATE GOVERNMENT-COMMISSIONER SAMUEL OKORONKWO REVEALS.

The Ebonyi Government said it has uncovered a job scam in its Local Government Area (LGA) system, involving cemetery keepers.

The State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Samuel Okoronkwo, disclosed this on Thursday in Abakaliki.

Okoronkwo noted that the cemetery workers were enrolled in the Consolidated Heath Salary Structure (CONHESS) of the state.
“Investigations revealed that the previous administrations in the state employed about 838 workers as cemetery keepers, even when there is no cemetery managed by government in the 13 Local Government Areas. The only cemetery in the state is in Abakaliki and it is being managed by the Catholic Church, so one wonders the job being performed by the cemetery keepers.
They don’t have job schedule, don’t go to work but collect high salary at the end of every month, even more than those actually doing the work. This is fraudulent and government will ensure it does not continue, as it wants to always toe the path of transparency and probity,” he said.
Okoronkwo said that the affected workers would not be sacked but would be removed from the CONHESS enrollment and posted to other areas in the local government areas where they would be useful.

“A committee has been inaugurated to look into the issue with members drawn from various unions and government agencies. We will also screen certificates of workers working under the LGA system, as we have discovered that many workers in the LGA system have fake certificates,” he said.

TONTO DIKE-CHURCHILL MESSAGE TO MEN AND WOMEN SUFFERING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.

Nollywood actress Tonto Dikeh-Churhill shared this lovely message on social media today. She advised men and women to run away from toxic partners and she encouraged that praying together is the most intimate act a couple can engage in.

See her post below.

Praying together is the most intimate act a couple can engage in. My husband and I do nothing without hitting those knees on the ground to God Almighty. Its better than Sex I tell ya, But also give ur spouse good TLC always..

It’s time for women to stop entertaining the boffinry of satisfaction that comes from mere social media posts Or the envy that comes from those images you see showcasing the picture perfect couples.

Men who prey on women view their victims as less than human..Run Away from such human••In his mind they’re just variables in a math equation to get to a desired result or conclusion.

Ladies there is no reasoning with him or appeasing to his sensibilities, because you’re only a nut in his mind and falling in love is the last thing on his mind.

He will say whatever u want to hear and become the man u always dreamed about to suck u in his world , and once ur locked in he will unleash the wrath of who he really is .

The more u try to get him to be accountable for his behavior , the more he will have u thinking ur losing ur mind , as he attempts to blame you for his cheating and putting his hands on u .

He can’t reciprocate ur love , because he disconnected from his own moral compass along time ago .

He doesn’t operate in right vs wrong , only wins vs losses. Every woman that gives him his way and let’s him treat her like shit is a win & when she finally wakes up and no longer allows him to control her it’s a loss.

EX-FINANCE MINISTER YUGUDA DETAINED FOR COLLECTING N450M DIEZANI BRIBE.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has detained a former Minister of Finance, Ambassador Bashir Yuguda, over his alleged involvement in the $115m (N23bn) bribe which was distributed by a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke.

The EFCC said in a statement that the ex-minister who is a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, allegedly diverted N450m out of the money.

The money, which was distributed through Fidelity Bank Plc, was said to have been used to bribe officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission during the 2015 presidential election.

The statement read in part, “The EFCC has detained the former Minister finance, Ambassador Bashir Yuguda, over his involvement in 23bn bribery poll. Ambassador Yuguda in his statement admitted collecting a total of N450m in his capacity as a senior executive of the PDP in his state.”

Yuguda had been arrested by the EFCC last year after he allegedly received suspicious payments from a former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), who has been embroiled in the arms deal scam.

Yuguda allegedly received N1.5bn from the former NSA’s office through an unnamed company, for unstated purpose.

He also allegedly received N1.275bn from Stallion Group during the campaign for the last general election.

Another N775m was also allegedly paid to him from the office of the Accountant General of the Federation for unstated purpose.
All the monies were allegedly paid to him between December 2014 and May, 2015.

Meanwhile, the EFCC on Wednesday re-arraigned a former Interior Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, before  a Federal High Court, Abuja for alleged his alleged fraudulent role in the botched 2014  Nigerian Immigration Service recruitment in 2014.

Moro was re-arraigned along with his co-accused – a former Permanent Secretary in the Interior Ministry, Mrs. Anastasia Daniel-Nwobia, an ex-director in the ministry, Felix Alayebami and a firm, Drexel Tech Nigeria Limited.

They were earlier arraigned on 11 counts before Justice Anwuri Chikere of the Federal High Court in Abuja on February 29.

Trial was to commence before Justice Chikere on April 27, when she announced that she was withdrawing from the case, citing “personal reasons.”

They were subsequently re-arraigned before Justice Nnamdi Dimgba on Wednesday.

In the 11 counts filed by the EFCC, the defendants were accused of defrauding 675, 675 graduate applicants of about N675,675,000 who were made to pay N1,000 each as processing fees for 5,000 job openings.

The four defendants were also accused of breaching the Public Procurement Act, No. 65 of 2007 in the award of the contract for the organisation of the recruitment test to Drexel Tech Nigeria Ltd.Justice Dimgba  adjourned till June 8 for commencement of trial.

Meanwhile, the EFCC says two ex-ministers who served under former President Goodluck Jonathan have confessed to receiving over N1.1bn from the $115m (N23bn) bribe which was allegedly disbursed by another of Jonathan’s ex-ministers, Diezani Alison-Madueke.

The Diezani fund, which was distributed through Fidelity Bank Plc, was allegedly meant to compromise officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission ahead of the 2015 presidential election.

The EFCC said this in a statement on its official Facebook page on Wednesday.

The commission said a former Minister of Mines and Steel, Musa Sada, confessed to receiving N700m on behalf of the Governor of Katsina State, Alhaji Ibrahim Shema, in 2015.

The anti-graft agency said the second minister, Mrs. Asabe Ahmed, who served as the Minister of State for Agriculture, revealed how she personally signed and collected the sum of N450m.
The EFCC added that Ahmed also stated that she kept the sum of N105m for herself.

The statement read in part, “A former Minister of Mines and Steel, Musa Sada, has told the EFCC of his involvement in the alleged N23.29bn poll bribery scandal. Sada is one of the former ministers in the administration of former President Jonathan being investigated by the anti-graft agency.”

ALLEGED WIFE KILLER SPEAKS OUT FROM HIDING- I DID NOT KILL MY WIFE.

Lekan Shonde, the husband of late Ronke Shonde who is alleged to have died after being beaten by her husband, has spoken out from hiding.

According to Punch, they were able to contact Lekan via the phone of an in-law and the communication has been authenticated by the Police.

Speaking with the newspaper, Lekan denies killing his wife or even beating her on the night she died  he also denied locking his kids in the house.

Here’s what Lekan shared with Punch Metro:
Since I married my wife eight years ago, she has never bought anything into the house. I gave her N5,000 on Saturdays and N3,000 on Tuesdays for soup. I also gave her money to make her hair.
“She was working with GTB as a marketer, but she got sacked three years ago. For that period, I was the one feeding her and taking responsibility for everything in the family. I would wash her pants, bathe the children and buy foodstuffs in the house. She later got a job with a publishing company owned by her uncle.
“But my wife changed sometime in March, when she started dating the general manger of a publishing company. My wife was going to the office from Monday to Sunday and she wasn’t going to church again, all because of this man. She called him ‘Eyitemi’ (My own).
“Last week Friday, she went to Abuja and came back on Monday. She never told me that the lover was there with her. I learnt later that the lover was there and they slept together in the same room for four days.
“When she came back, she didn’t know I was inside the house. She started talking with the man on the phone that he really had fun with him and I didn’t know how to make love. She again said her private parts were paining her.”
It was around 9pm on Thursday. We had paid our nanny N20,000. Then we needed to pay our children’s teachers N30,000. I discovered she had taken N20,000 and when I asked her to return my money, she said she had spent it.
“I was angry because for the past three months, she didn’t allow me to have sex with her. I pushed her hand away from me on the staircase and I left her. She never tumbled or fell. In fact that night, I bought the food that we both ate because she said she didn’t want to cook.
“I didn’t know anything had happened to her until Friday when I saw her on the staircase. I thought she was still pretending. I just left her and walked away.”
“Jide, her family’s second child lived with me for three to four years. Their eldest daughter, Bolatito, has lived with me too.
“Although I am not a saint, I don’t drink, I don’t smoke. I am a responsible man. The problem with my wife was that she was temperamental. She shouted at me whenever she talked.
“I am a Lagos boy and I can be in this Lagos for the next 30 years and nobody would see me.”
Family members of the late Ronke were also contacted by Punch Metro and while the family is still in mourning they emphasized that they have forgiven Lekan and pleaded with him not to commit suicide.

WHY I WON'T RUN FOR PRESIDENCY IN 2019 - GOVERNOR ROCHAS OKOROCHA.

Imo State Governor, and Chairman of the All Progressive Congress’ Governors Forum, Rochas Okorocha has declared that he will not run for presidency in 2019 because President Muhammadu Buhari “has shown courage, confidence, maturity and strong leadership”.

He made the statement over the weekend while responding to questions from newsmen during a tour of his administration’s key projects.
“I have been running for the presidency until God said I should settle for the Imo governorship. And that passion to become the President of the country is not just borne out of the thirst for the position, but had arisen out of the eagerness to offer the nation and her people a strong leadership; the essence would be to build a nation of our collective dreams and aspirations.
President Buhari came in and, within one year, Nigeria has once again got the doors of the rest of the world opened for her.
He has shown courage, confidence, maturity and strong leadership. There is now high feelings of leadership in the country. What he, therefore, needs is to be supported and encouraged,” he said.

MAN LEAPT IN FRONT OF A BULLET TO PROTECT HIS GIRLFRIEND AND HER SON.

Jen a 35 years old woman has hailed her boyfriend as a “real-life hero” after he was shot at from point-blank range when using his body as a human shield to protect her and her young son.

Gareth Lane, 35, narrowly avoided being hit by a crazed gunman moments after getting off a bus with Jen, 35, and her four-year-old son Rio.

The gunman began to behave aggressively towards Jen during a bus journey from Sheffield into the countryside, where the family were planning on having a picnic.

But when Gareth, Jen and Rio got off the bus, the man shot at Gareth – who bravely leapt in front of his family in a bid to protect them.

The gunman fled and then hijacked a car at gunpoint and forced the driver to take him to Sheffield city centre.

Jen said: “I have been asking him about commitment but then he stands in front of a bullet for me!
“I just want to shout it out from the rooftops  – who needs Spider-Man when I’ve got my own real-life hero.”

Speaking about the horrific ordeal, Gareth said: "I don’t think I’m going to have to marry Jen to prove my loyalty any more. My only concern was the safety of Jen and Rio.

"The man was being quite aggressive towards Jen during the journey – and I told him he should stop.

"When we got off the bus, he got off behind me and when I turned round he had pulled a gun out.
"I must have been four feet away from him when he fired. I don’t know how but he must have missed.

"I think it was a real gun because the cartridge was still smoking for a while on the ground afterwards.

"Then he pulled a knife out. I went to grab a dry stone from the wall and my plan was to hit him with it, but then he just legged it.

"The police later told me that he then went and hijacked a car at gunpoint.”

Gareth added: “I’m still a little bit shaken up. Rio seems OK; he said he enjoyed his ride in the police car.

"We will have to keep an eye on him.”

Gareth, who wants the gunman to get help, said: “I’m quite pleased to still be alive and kicking – but this man obviously needs some help.

"I think he must have some sort of mental health issues and it goes to show the effect of the cuts to mental health services.

"I’m positive that if there had been mental health provisions in place that these sort of things might not happen.”

EBONYI- COURT SENTENCES 2 TO DEATH BY HANGING FOR KIDNAPPING IN ABAKALIKI.

An Abakaliki High Court has sentenced two persons, Onyemachi Oge and Okechukwu Oma, to death by hanging for kidnapping a medical doctor.

They abducted Dr. Chuka Manyike of Paediatrics Department, Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, on May 5th, 2013, at his private hospital at 15, Owerri Street, Abakaliki.

The convicts were charged alongside Chukwuemeka Levi, Idris Oken, Edeke Desmond and Ijeoma Oge for conspiracy and kidnapping.

Manyike’s security guard was shot dead during the kidnapping for attempting to prevent the hoodlums from kidnapping the doctor.

The sum of N3 million was said to have been paid as ransom before the doctor was released after six days in captivity.

According to the charge sheet, Oge and Oma got N200, 000 from the ransom. All the accused were in prison custody since their arrest after the incident.

Delivering judgment on the matter on Friday in Abakaliki, Justice Eze Udu said that the prosecution had proved its case against Oge and Oma beyond reasonable doubt and sentenced them to death by hanging.

Anikwem discharged and acquitted Levi, Oken and Desmond, but ordered that Ijeoma and her husband, who is at large, should be charged for conspiracy and kidnapping “for allowing their house to be used in keeping the victim during the incident”.

Oma, a tailor opposite Manyinke’s hospital, provided information to the kidnappers and gave them directive on how to perfect the act, while Ijeoma Oge supplied beer, biscuits and water to the doctor during his days in captivity.

Reacting to the judgment, counsel to the 3rd, 4th and 5th accused, D.I. Njoku, said that he would appeal the judgment against the 4th accused, who was sentenced to death.

CAMEROONIAN WHO ATTEMPTED SUICIDE IN LEKKI IS RESCUED BY LASEMA.

A Twitter @kenegbas user sent in photos and videos of a man attempting to commit suicide by in Ikate, Lekki. According to Instablog9ja, his name is Frederick Gino from Cameroon and he has no idea how he came into Nigeria.

Ken Egbas narrated as follows,

I should state here that the electricity pole that the said man climbed is directly in front of my residence. I was present from onset 6:35am or thereabout when this began till 3:15pm when he was brought down by LASEMA. Plus, when I heard the commotion outside & looked and saw my security man involved I went outside called them to inquire what the issue was. I also tried to engage him in a conversation. He was looking gaunt, underfed, distraught, disoriented. Because he was walking around without a shirt & looking dirty, it attracted attention of some four guys on the street who asked who he was. So he reacted badly to being accosted & shoved. At closer looked, I could hazard a guess that he may also had been 'high' on something.

He said " I don suffer for this life. No money..no house...five days I never chop. Everywhere I go them pursue me..."I go Morocco, dem deport me. See my life...I no fit help myself. I no get cloth or place to sleep. E better make I die".

Those were his exact words to me. Then he started running & three guys chased him. He ran into this building & in process of apprehending him a glass window was shattered. Hence the peoplee chasing him who were also overzealous started beating him & calling him a thief. That was the point at which he made for the pole &begun climbing with hands & feet. I was surprised how he did that so fast. After he got up there he was muttering stuff in French, Hausa & pidgin English. At a point I had to call my Beniniose cook to interpret. He said he wanted cigarettes &ogogoro. I asked cook to get them for him & also raised up the sum of 5000 naira & showed him. At a point it seemed he was cooperating. after a while he started speaking gibberish. Say he wanted Nepa to give power so he could die.

Officials from PHCN, Nigerian Police Force and Fire Service later arrived at the scene but they were not “well-equipped” to carry out a rescue operation.

In the end, a neighbor provided an inflatable trampoline in an attempt to persuade the man to come down.
As at the time of this report he is yet to get off the electric pole but thankfully the appropriate authorities are now on ground to help.

He was later brought to the ground safely. This was after he refused all forms of help and even foiled the LASEMA officials attempt to rescue him.

For the rescue operation, two men went up a ladder to rescue him and to do that, they tried to topple him over with sticks. He held fast to the pole before he started using his teeth to tear off the cables. When the pain became unbearable, he jumped off and landed on a low rooftop. Before landing, he cut a corner of the roofing sheet and began using it to slit his throat once he landed. In the end, the men wrestled him down and had him in cuffs hands & feet

Frederick Gino had a deep gash on his throat inflicted by roofing sheet he used to slit throat.

GODSWILL AKPABIO - KIDNAPPING IN RETURN FOR MONEY BEGAN IN ABIA STATE. ABIA STATE GOVT REPLIES.

Abia state government has responded to former Akwa Ibom governor and Senator representing Akwa Ibom North West (Ikot Ekpene), Godswill Akpabio over a statement he made that kidnapping in return for money began in Abia state.

Akpabio was said to have made the claim on Wednesday while contributing to the debate on the Joint Committee Report on Police Affairs, National Security and Intelligence.

Chief Press Secretary to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, Godwin Adindu in a statement described Akpabio’s claim as “erroneous and misleading,” saying kidnapping “was born and nurtured in the Niger Delta”. He said:
This declaration by the Distinguished Senator is an attempt to re-write history whilst history remains constant. The most anti-human crime of kidnapping in all its ramifications, either for ransom or as a form of protest, remains a child of the Niger Delta. It was born and nurtured in the Niger Delta. Its roots go deep into the creeks.
Kidnapping in other places was an off-shoot of the failure of the management of the Amnesty Programme, when non-indigenes who were recruited to the barter trade of oil in exchange for arms and hard currency were excluded from the national amnesty programme.
The creek warlords had long started kidnapping for money before President Umaru Yar’Adua introduced the pacification and rehabilitation programme.

ROBBERY GONE WRONG AS MOB LYNCHES ARMED ROBBER FOR KILLING LAGOS OPC LEADER.

On Wednesday att Olaleye Street, in the Iponri area of Lagos State, armed robbers shot dead a leader of the Oodua People’s Congress, Sanjo Akintoye, during a failed attack.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the robber, who came on a motorcycle with another suspect, expended his bullets on the 43-year-old security guard, who struggled with him till the end.

As he made to reload his pistol, residents swooped on him and broke his skull with stones, sticks and bottles.

He died on the spot and the corpse was recovered by policemen from the Iponri division.

Our correspondent, who visited the scene, learnt that the suspect and his accomplice had trailed a worker at a construction site, who had gone to withdraw N500,000 from a branch of Zenith bank in the area.

A witness, who did not identify himself, said the rider and the passenger were challenged for riding a motorcycle into the area.

He said,

“One of us was asked to withdraw money from the Zenith Bank around 11am. As he was coming back on foot, he was surprised to see two people following him on a motorcycle.

“One of us, Baba Bolu, challenged them for riding motorcycle into the area. The man at the back of the motorcycle shot him in the leg and in the hand. Baba Bolu lost a finger. Chairman (Akintoye) was returning from the toilet when he heard the gunshots and he confronted the robber.

“The robber faced him and released a hail of bullets on him. Chairman was hit, but he moved closer to the suspect. The robber continued to fire shots till he expended his bullets.”

Another witness said the gunshots attracted the attention of other OPC members and some residents in the area.

He said while the robber was shooting Akintoye, the residents had blocked all escape routes.

“Some of us stood on the road, while others stayed behind vehicles. Immediately we saw that he had expended his bullets, one of us attacked the robber as he climbed the motorcycle to flee the scene.

“He fell. Some other people moved closer and hit him with planks, bottles and any weapon they could find, but the rider escaped,” he added.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Akintoye was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was confirmed dead.
The news of his death was said to have angered residents, who again stabbed the suspect.

Our correspondent gathered that a robber had two months ago entered the estate on a motorcycle and escaped with N500,000 after trailing another resident from the same bank.

A worker in the estate, Francis Oloto, said that the incident was captured on a CCTV, adding that the robber had a motorcyclist waiting for him at the junction.

He said, “That day, he wore a fez cap and jeans. He trailed the worker till he got here. From what we saw on the CCTV, he was accompanied by three motorcyclists who were waiting at the junction.

“Immediately he collected the money at gunpoint, he mounted one of the motorcycles and rode off while others followed. He made away with the N500,000.”

PUNCH Metro observed as friends and relatives of the slain OPC leader lamented that they were not allowed access to firearms.

One of them, who did not identify himself, said, “We discussed it at our last meeting that we need to have guns to be able to function well.”

The deceased was described as an amiable leader, who devoted his time and energy to maintaining peace and order in the area.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said the police recovered one pistol with nine expended and 10 unexpended cartridges.

She said, “Today, at about 11am, one Adeyemi reported that he was attacked by two armed men on a motorcycle, who asked him to hand over the money he had withdrawn to them. He resisted and in the process, he was shot on his right leg which attracted passersby.

“The hoodlums, sensing danger, shot at one Olatunji Ogundele and Sanjo Akintoye. One of the culprits was overpowered by the crowd and lynched, while the other escaped.

“The victims were rushed to a hospital for treatment, while the corpse of the armed robber has been taken to the Yaba General Hospital mortuary.”
